TATA Sumo Grande : Review
The 9`th Auto Expo 2008 saw another Star attraction from an Indian House ! The all new “Sumo Grande” ! You can’t possibly guess its a TATA unless you see the logo. Its amazingly beutiful and powerful and stylish and spacious and smooth and … if you compare it with its older bro.
The Design and Styling
The Sumo grande was styled by the Concept Group in the UK, with whom TATA has worked previously. It looks sleeker as a result of Angular shape, flowing lines and as some excess headroom is taken away. With no fussy details visible, its bold, clean and fresh. The rear with crispy styled tail lights look very modern. In short, An SUV look.

The new Sumo Grande combines the looks of an SUV with the comforts of a family car. It has been specifically designed to satisfy the needs of city customers in the areas of driveability, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency. The Sumo Grande sports an all-new styling with clean, chiselled looks matching with flowing contours. The tall aggressive stance is complimented by large, clear headlamps, and a cutaway air dam in the front. The clean, rear look, with the spare wheel tucked under the body, is accentuated by attractive taillights and a chrome overlay.
Designed with a longer wheelbase of 2,550mm (existing 2,400mm), the Sumo Grande sports comfortable 3-row seating with best in class third row seats. Beige interiors are complimented by fire and stain resistant fabric upholstery. Dual HVAC with roof-integrated louvers ensures personalised climate adjustment for the occupants in each row. Power steering, power windows, motorised ORVMs, height adjustable driver’s seat and a state-of-the-art CD / MP3 music system further add to the comforts and convenience of a family travelling in the Sumo Grande. The vehicle is powered by the new generation 2.2-l direct injection common rail (DICOR) engine, fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger creating a perfect blend of performance and fuel efficiency. Maximum power and torque of 120ps and 250nm, coupled with high-torque levels over a wide RPM band enhance driveability in stop-start city traffic. For a vehicle of its size, the Sumo Grande is extremely manoeuvrable with the turning circle radius of 5.25m, similar to a small car.
The Sumo Grande will be available in 3 variants – Lx, Ex and Gx — all of which have two seating configurations: 6+1 and 7+1. The vehicle will be available in seven colours, including four new shades: sunset orange, zephyr green, mineral red and marine blue. The Sumo Grande range is priced in the range of Rs6.55 lakh to Rs7.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It comes with an enhanced warranty of two years or 75000kms. (whichever is earlier). An additional two years’ warranty can be availed through the extended warranty option. The vehicle will be available in showrooms across the country from the first week of February 2008.

An excellant all time CAR/MUV/COMPANION.
Comment by Parikshit Sharma February 26th, 2008 at 7:28 amThis product from TATA shall continue to keep the promises made by TATA towards its customers.
An excellant combination for all mode users (city/cross country/highway)either in groups or woth families.
Deaperately waiting to owe one and drive.
Tata should stick to building trucks. I own a Ford and I test drove the Grande Gx today. Found the build and design very interesting. Engine was really very receptive – if a bit noisy. Tyres are really big. Paint and outside build finish good. But the interiors really sucked. The Auto power window button didn’t work in its so called ‘one-touch’ mode. The door handles are so flimsy, one came off in my hands. When I asked to see the engine, I couldn’t because the cable that activates the release had broken. The rear cup-holder came off in my hands. And the front dashboard is a shrine to the cheapest of cheapest plactic. Steering wheel lacked chunkiness. The on-road price came to 8.78 lakhs. A bit too much for something that comes with little or no refinement.
Comment by gautam March 18th, 2008 at 9:59 amMr Gautam seems to be anti Tata from his feedback, the manner in which the gentleman has written the feedback itself reveals that he is Bluffing. If u dont have the budget for the Grande keep driving you Ford(does not even mention the Model!!!!!)
Comment by Suyog March 25th, 2008 at 4:28 pmGrande might not be the best of refined vehicles but it surely does give value to money, what else you could look for a tag of 8.78 lakhs
