Mahindra Xylo at 6.2 Lakhs: The Innova challenger and another innovation

Mahindra Xylo at 6.2 Lakhs: The Innova challenger and another innovationIngenio is here ! or Xylo as the company calls it, ’cause they like the movie “The Mask” and the dog in it. With Xylo, Mahindra hopes to take on the Toyota Innova which has been stealing customers from its Scorpio alternative since it started life. Although, its the brand and overall performance & economy, the reasons which got Innova such success, there is a chance, people think, of it being a MUV style played a important place. Well, I don’t . How many of you liked the Innova when you first saw it ? Its when it showed up everywhere you look on the streets and people talking great about it, its then you felt the style of it.

Xylo which is more of a MUV style rather than a SUV like Scoprio, which should help Mahindra take customers from Innova and keep the Scorpio territory safe. Win Win formula ? Well, lets see. Powerful Diesel Engine, Great Economy, Seating comfort, it has got everything an indian looks in an MUV. Even priced below scorpio range.

Xylo comes with a 2.5-litre CRDe (common rail diesel engine) like in the Scorpio, but it will also, in due course of time, get a petrol engine for its export avatar.

Mahindra plans to launch a mass-market light-cargo product also that will take on Tata Ace. In 2010, it will roll out its global SUV product which will spearhead M&M’s export thrust as well as be a crucial domestic launch. Xylo, packs in a number of bells and whistles like the flat bed, tray tables, individual AC vents, power steering, power window and central locking even in the base variant, priced at Rs 6.24 lakh.

The company Says, “The Xylo is just Rs 40,000 more expensive than Swift Dzire, so we’re looking to re-invent the sedan space.” Yeah, they wish. But stonger I wish to disagree that Xylo won’t steal sedan market, I know deep inside me that there are people who don’t have a clear Idea, if they need a MUV or Sedan. Both are different people ! Very much different.

Mahindra XYLO has been completely engineered around the customer and has a powerful 2.49 litre mEagle CRDe engine which is fuel-efficient and delivers 112 bhp, allowing you to literally fly from 0-60 kmph in just 5.8 seconds. Moreover, it offers class-defining lavish space all around such that even a 6ft tall person can stretch in comfort on the 3rd row seat. The XYLO offers an extraordinary level of luxurious comfort at a very cost-effective price for prospective sedan buyers

Xylo SeatsXylo has potential. It has theDigital Drive Assist System (DDAS). An alphanumeric display in the centre panel, the DDAS has features such as an onboard computer to calculate mileage and distance permissible, which we usually see in a merc or a beemer. It also tells time and date, inside and outside temperature and relative humidity. If you have neck problems and can’t look down to the gear shift, a press of a button will inform you your gear position and speed. The DDAS will also tell you how long your fuel will last and share information on your average speed and the instant mileage clocked by you. The DDAS also has an inbuilt warning system for seat belts and handbrake engaged drive. The Intellipark Reverse Assist has a visual prompt in the rear view mirror which shows you the distance between the rear bumper and any object behind your car. The 2 Din Entertainment System plays MP3s and CDs, SD cards and USB devices.

The driver’s seat is ergonomically designed with height adjustment control to maximize comfort on long drives. Lumbar support can also be adjusted to three positions while the unique tiltable steering wheel gives you the perfect driving position. An illuminated keyhole ring allows you to conveniently locate the keyhole even in pitch dark conditions. Utility spaces abound in the Mahindra XYLO with a well defined Centre Console.

Diesel, India and why Honda and Maruti should make it

Honda LogoIn country where fuel efficiency is preferred over comfort and performance, you expect a company which produces only petrol engined cars to have a tough time selling their hot shots. But it isn’t so. Where companies give out diesel options to grab more market share, the two companies who relied on only petrol engines are Maruti Suzuki and Honda. Both had success but Honda proved bigger cars with petrol engines can give better fuel efficiency along with performance. Its hard to say which ones a better one, but I can surely say diesel engines have come a long way compared to the petrol ones.

But is it really worth making a diesel option in the same margin ? Majority Indians fancy diesel. So what if we give out a diesel option of a popular car by cutting some costs ? I’ll tell you, People will buy it, buy a lot. There are many examples for this like Swift & Dzire, Verna, Octavia, Laura .. the list will go on. Every one of these cars diesel version outsells the petrol. Its a simple fact, “lower running cost”. If any of you petrol-heads feel diesels are heavy and has higher maintenance cost, you might be right ! But the thing is - not all, the newer diesel engines are so good that their savings in the long run are higher than the maintenance costs, which also is very much less.

Maruti-Suzuki takes the easier route buying itself a license to put award winning FIAT MultiJet engines in its cars, rather than spend millions on development of a new diesel engine. So far its doing great. The Swift Diesel range is so popular, there was waiting time of months even when Automobile companies in the US were going bust. Imagine when SX4 diesel rolls out!

Turbocharged Honda i-DTEC EngineWhere Maruti “needs” to make diesel cars, Honda has an option. So why isn’t Honda making a diesel engine ? Either, Its happy with the petrol cars or they have “this thing” for Koreans and Czechs. Well, the truth is, it is having a go at it - i-DTEC & i-CTDi, which will produce “Clean Diesel”. The i-DTEC engine series is capable of exceeding the proposed Euro6 regulations. Honda has made a great deal of progress with its advanced combustion management and after treatment systems and had show.
The new 2.2 litre i-CTDi power unit joins Honda’s intelligently-controlled i-series family of engines that already includes the i-VTEC and i-DSI range of petrol engines. It will be used to power, among others, the Honda Accord and, at a later date, the Honda CR-V.

So all we have to do is wait for a year or so to release it abroad and then wait for it study Indian market and then wait for it to release it here, which might be in near future.
